David Hughes, Defacer of Books and some of his achievements: 2006 – I graffitied 140 bits of art over Victor Hugo’s The Hunchback of Notre-Dame translated and adapted by Jan Needle. New Years Eve 2009 – Walking The Dog was published by Jonathan Cape a sort of fairy tale nightmare guide to the wonderful of illustration and stuff to be taken with a pinch of salt 2010 – I illustrated the classic novel Count Belisarius by Robert Graves  published by The Folio Society a book for those people who subscribe to the Readers Digest and have private health care. 2005 – Cool Cat Hot Dog (Athenaeum) – the final Sandy Turner picture book is published in the States and the UK and is pulped within minutes of publication. It won a prize for it’s text. Sandy Turner went bankrupt. Sandy Turner was a diversion, a brand. An ill-conceived attempt at avoiding type-casting. Died in Norfolk England 2006. Other Sandy Turner titles: Silent Night (Athenaeum USA) published 2001 (One of my personal favourites and the first Turner to see the light of day) it won a prize at the Bologna Book Fair cant re-call what it was called / Grow Up – (HarperCollins USA) 2003 followed won a Society of Illustrators silver medal in the States for it’s pictures. Tales from Gizzard’s Grill written by Jeanne Steig 2004 and Otto’s Trunk a New York Times 10 best picture book of the year published by HarperCollins circa 2004 / Silent Night was a reaction to Shakespeare’s Othello (Alibaba Verlag Germany 1997) Othello picked up one or two awards including a D@AD. Bully (Walker Books) 1992/3 and in Germany it picked up some prestigious award under the dreadful translated title “Macker” / before that there were illustrations for Jan Mark’s Strat and Chatto 1990 (just been re-issued a couple of years ago by Walker Books) won the Mother Goose Award for the best illustrations for a first time childrens book illustrator in 1989/90, so Black and White (Pelham Books 1986) was considered to be a picture book for adults. A book featuring a warring cat and magpie a theme returned to in Sandy Turner’s Cool Cat Hot Dog / an’ all the time I’ve been doing work for various publications like The New Yorker, The Guardian Newspaper, Esquire Magazine, the London Evening Standard Magazine, The Observer Magazine, etc and designing the sets and costumes for a couple of operas in Italy.
