gcs and i went to the vander ende-onderdonk house on saturday. we intended to catch a demonstration on how to make wampum. the instructor was late, so we sat in the grass, and befriended the most loving and sweetest stray cat i’ve ever encountered. she laid in our laps purring and we pondered her very pregnant belly, worrying about what would happen to her and how she and her soon-to-be-born kittens would survive.
we went inside for a house tour, and when we came out – lo and behold – she was having her kittens! i think she was surprised by the sudden birthing, because one of them was lying on the sidewalk in the sun and she had to come back for it and take it under the bushes, where another little one was mewing.
gcs went home to get a box and some food for her, and while i sat there petting her head and encouraging her to clean her little ones, she quietly and silently gave birth to another kitten – a beautiful tiger striped one with a solid white belly.
it was so beautiful and amazing, to witness this unexpected miracle in an overgrown patch of garden, at a dutch farmhouse, in bushwick.
if you live in NYC and would like one of the sweetest cats EVER, let me know and we can try and arrange for you to adopt one of the kittens, or the mama cat.
(we would have taken her, but gcs has a big dog and i already have two cats, with a new kitten on it’s way to live with us.)
